Vintage Iyengar Marriage

Typical Iyengar marriageMappillai Azaippu

Nalangu-bridal side

Mangalya Tharanam

Reception

Kasi Yatra
dear Readers,

I recently attended my relative's marriage.

We( Mappillai Party ) went to the marriage Hall at 3 PM were served with tiffin, evening at 5 PM Nichiyathartham, 7 PM reception, next day morning 8 AM Kasi yathra, 10 AM Mangalyam Dhanduna, 11 AM Gruhapravesam, evening Nalangu and the function all over by next day -
a business like function. I saw people are in a hurry to go home. The charm and bondage associated with marriage of the olden days not visible.

Do you imagine the cost of this marriage ?

Marriage Hall Rs.30000 .

Meals- per head Rs. 100

Tiffin- Rs. 50 per head

Coffee- Rs 5/per small cup ( Paper cup )

My memory went back- to the period of my Grand Father-1940s to 1950s.

He was a mirasdar. had wetlands in Kalyanapuram, Tanjore Dit, Tamil Nadu. I vaguely remembered the marriage he conducted to his last daughter . Marriage functions were to last for 3-days.

Unlike these days, the marriage used to be conducted in their own house if it is big otherwise they will do it in a big house in the village . Our house was big enough. Pandal was put for 2-houses combined- since many functions had to be performed outside.

One house is for storage of Provisions, vegetables, fruits etc. One house is reserved to Food preparation and one house for eating.

The First day is for Mappillai Azaippu- Big Car is arranged-decorated with flowers. The marriage procession will start from the Temple and to reach the destination it will take 2-hours. During this period. best Nagaswara Vidwan will play Music-enchanting music for the feast of whole village.

The second day will be the Actual marriage day. The function will start from 5.30 AM-when both the bride and bride-groom will perform homam-Nama karma-jathaka karma.

This will be followed by Kasi yatra-when a drama enacted-small tussle between bridegroom and his father-in-law

At around 10 AM-the actual thali- or mangalya tharanam will take place.
In the evening Nalangu from Girl side-when young and old alike will participate, singing, jokes etc will be the feature. Thereafter there will be a good music performance-renowned Singer of that period will perform.

The third day function belongs to the Groom side. Gruhapravesam and Nalangu from groom side will be there.

The marriage function will conclude on the 4th day by sending off the groom part along with the bride with enough food to last for the journey .

All relatives will participate wholeheartedly- by shouldering different areas including serving the food. The whole village will be in joyous mood and everyone will be looked after without distinction.

It is a special time for children

The expenses will be minimum-since provisions, rice etc will be from their own land, no rent for marriage hall etc.

Some of funtions during the marriage is brought out in photographs in upper case. This is a typical Iyengar marriage

Have you for a moment thought about how your marriage went on ? Share your experience with me.

My Nano Home

Lord Ranganatha- Pagal Pathu

My Nano Home

dear Readers,

I am glad to share with you my experience of shifting my home from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka.

we- myself and my wife with permission from children were living at Srirangam for the last 14-years. It is said that at the fag end of our life-if we live at the above place-it will be a gate-way to Vaikunda Loka- The saying is: Engum churri Ranganai Adai- we did it exactly after serving many parts of India and world.

We had very peaceful life with daily visiting the Big Temple worshipping Lord Ranganatha.
To enable us to have His Dharshan - Lord used to visit all over Srirangam with variuous Vahanas almost round the year- it is a wonderful sight to see than hear. (Some of alankarams in which the is seen - as above )

A time came when I turned 79- My sons adviced me to return to them. They said they will build a new cottage for us in the present house at Bangalore. Our Bangalore house is in a small plot of 1000-sq.ft. We decided to demolish the existing building and construct a new one.

In order to maintain the cordial relationship- I opted a small single bed room house with car parking in the ground floor- 480 sq.ft cottage, 950-sq.ft-2 bed room apartment in Ist and IInd floors for my sons and guest rooms in 3rd floor.

A simple single bedroom- call it Nano Home became a reality and myself and my wife moved to this house in Jan-2009. You want to see the Nano House?-here it is.

Please view the house at the top of the head line.

It is possible to build the house within the reach of middle income group around Rs.4-5 lakhs

The above house is having all the comforts one needs.

Welcome to our Nano Home.

1. Towards the end of a hectic worldly career, one searches for his spiritual identity.

The collections that follow is one such effort by the authors, during their reading of

various publications ( Newspapers, Periodicals, Magazines, Books etc.) and hearing of

discourses.

2. Readers are requested to enhance these collections by :

. correcting / modifying the existing information

. adding additional information on existing topics

. adding additional topics

  1. The objective of circulating the compilation is to initiate one right from childhood

( instead of waiting for retirement ! ) ; for one’s eternal bliss depends wholly on

spirituality – while the worldly pursuits cater to his struggle for survival with duals of

joy / sorrow etc.

4. This is meant for a layman – starting from children and therefore details and texts have

been avoided.

5. The Supreme God has been referred to as Vishnu in the Vishsitadvaita school, six (shan) madas in the advaita school etc. In this collection, while concepts are common to all schools, specific illustrations are based on theVaishnava school , as the authors belong to this school and are familiar with it.

6. One can venture into elaborate study through various publications - a list of publishers

has been covered in section 10.

7. We acknowledge the various sources of information; individual credits is next to impossible

as they are limitless and overlapping.
