JAMAL – AUTOMOTIVE COLLISION

JAMAL – AUTOMOTIVE COLLISION
REPAIRER REFINISHER

When I was very much worried as to how I can renew my Luna license- which according
to RTO to be condemned, my friend directed me to go to Jamal. Jamal garage was full of damaged cars and two wheelers. Hardly with two boys the deft hand of Jamal removes
the dent, weld, repaint and so on. Jamal tells the story as how came into this line. )

When I met Jamal with my two wheeler he immediately recognized me as his father’s
boyhood friend. He welcomed me and phoned his father whom I met 40-years before. We
studied from Primary class and unto pre-university and left in different directions.
Bhasha- that is Jamal’s father came immediately and we both emotionally surcharged and immensely happy to meet after nearly 40-years.

Bhasha narrated his story. Pointing to Jamal he told he is well settled in life because of this young man whom he thought would not come up in life. Bhasha family consists of 4-sons and 6 daughters. Bhasha could not finish his undergraduate course due to family reason, soon joined as Government servant working in RTO office as lower division clerk. He wanted that both his sons and daughters should
study well and unlike him should become Advocates, Doctors and Scientists.

Jamal had different idea. For him mathematics was a stumbling block. From very early
age he was fascinated over cars and two wheelers. He used ride his friend’s scooter. On one occasion he took his friend’s scooter and went on a trip. To his ill luck his scooter was hit by a bullock cart and was damaged. Both the rear and front portion mudguards heavily dented.

Jamal instead of brooding over it brought the scooter to his house. With few hand tools he sat and slowly worked on removing the dent. Throughout the night he worked and finally he brought the scooter to its original condition. For the painting he had a novel idea. He purchased the Ferrari Sticker and pasted over that portion.
When he returned the Scooter to his friend-who is a Ferrari lover- was immensely pleased with the new look of the Scooter. This was his first experience for Jamal.

Bhasha was watching his work and decided that there is no point in compelling Jamal to study and put him in a nearby Garage. Natural inkling towards Automotive soon made Jamal to learn repairing and reconditioning of of all types of vehicles. His father was working in RTO office. Both Jamal and Bhasha thought that there is gold in damaged cars repairing. With Rs.10, 000 as his investment Jamal started his garage.

He specialized only in repairing accident involved cars and two wheelers. Mostly he worked on Tata-Sumo vehicles and was very successful. Soon his customer base swelled and money was flowing. Jamal did not forget to fulfill his father’s ambition. He educated his brothers and Sisters. They are Advocates, Doctors, and Engineers. Sisters are happily married and well settled in life.

Bhasha proudly recollected the story of his son Jamal. In many of my case studies I am emphasizing that no Profession is mean. Jamal case again proves that. In America Universities are offering courses on Auto Collision Repair and Refinishing. The course consists of many specialties – Structural Damage repair, Structural Auto Welding, Collision repairs Updated, Computerized measuring, Mix and apply paint, Defects-causes and cures, Preparation and Spot Painting, Mix and adjusting
colors, Letter, Stripping and designs, Refinishing Updates and so on.

Damage estimating and Computerized estimations are very popular and many students
become proficient in software specific computerized automotive damage-estimating
programs. When I saw my Luna with new look and new registration certificate I cannot but admire the deft hands of Jamal.

Analysis:

In 50s and 60s there were very few cars and two wheelers on the road. Today the
conditions are different. India’s production of cars and two wheelers stands third in the world. Middle class families invariably posses atleast two two wheelers and higher income groups with cars. Hence people like Jamal can have permanent jobs on their hand.

· Talents must be spotted and encouraged.
· Total devotion to the work is vital for success.
· There is gold in automotive field.
